In recent years, art educators have become more concerned with utilizing community-based art education. To build on the interests, concerns, and environment of the students and to connect art and community, educators, influenced by the Community Mural Movement of the 20th century, have made use of the artistic process of mural making. The use of mural making in art class began with Progressive artist-teachers, such as D’amico, utilizing mural making to solve the problem of integration in the art classroom and facilitate an interest in art education with older students. Mural making provides an opportunity to connect daily life to art, as everyone is influenced by the visual culture of our communities. And like Walker and other artists, art educators have utilized murals to beautify their environment and unify their communities, providing an opportunity for students to be involved within their communities and work to create a healthier environment.
