Mid to Late 20th Century
Politics and culture in the United States were progressing even further during the mid to late 20th century as a result of several movements led by those in oppressed groups such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Chicano Movement, the Women's Rights Movement, the Disability Rights Movement, the Gay Liberation Movement, etc. Those who were oppressed and demanding justice from those who were privileged used various and creative ways of sending their message out. Mural making became such a notable tool during this time to promote social justice and to unify people in the community, communities conceived their own movement with these murals which became what is referred to as the Community Mural Movement of the 20th century. There is no one definite location and time in which this movement began as it sprouted all over the United States and the world in various ways. While all of the communities involved in the movement are significant, this website will only explore the following:
